Explore John Piper and the Music of Benjamin Britten at Towner

September 7th, 2011.

With just three weeks left to catch John Piper in Kent & Sussex at Eastbourne’s award-winning contemporary art museum, Towner, visitors are being invited to explore the artist’s collaboration in world famous operas at a special Day School event taking place later this month.

On Saturday 24 September, Towner will host Piper and Tune, a one day event bringing music and painting together and looking at the way Piper’s stage designs influenced new works by well known English composer Benjamin Britten.

As a set designer for opera, Piper’s closest associate was Britten and they collaborated on productions including The Rape of Lucretia, which premiered at Glyndebourne in 1946, as well as The Turn of the Screw, which was streamed live across the world from Glyndebourne earlier this summer. Visitors to Towner’s website have the chance to view Glyndebourne’s The Turn of the Screw on demand until 12 September.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure Cllr Neil Stanley said “Piper and Tune promises to be a fantastic event for Towner, which will concentrate on Piper’s lesser known works such as stage sets for operas, which have strong connections with Glyndebourne located just outside of Eastbourne. It’s always brilliant to have works on display at Towner with great Sussex connections and this Day School event will offer a unique insight into the connection between music and art.”

The John Piper exhibition, which is on at Towner until 25 September, features Piper masterpieces alongside hidden treasures such as stage sets and costume designs, including a 3D set model for Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia.

Visitors can book now for Piper and Tune for just £35 per person, with the Day School promising to give Piper and Britten fans a real insight into the artist and composer’s relationship. The event will be led by Janet Canetty-Clarke in association with the University of Sussex.
