Visitors are being invited to discover the secrets behind the Napoleonic Fortress on Eastbourne seafront this week as it joins more than 4,000 venues around England taking part in Heritage Open Days 2011.
The Redoubt Fortress is offering Secrets of the Redoubt Tours from Thursday 8 – Sunday 11 September with visitors having a chance to take a peek at hidden parts of the fortress, not usually open to the public.
Heritage Open Days celebrates the country’s fantastic architecture and culture by throwing open the doors to a variety of venues across England offering visitors a chance to discover the hidden architectural treasures in events that bring local history and culture to life.
With the BBC National Treasures Live series recently naming the Redoubt as one of the country’s best hidden treasures on its website after running a poll on twitter, visitors have the chance to discover Eastbourne’s very own hidden treasure for themselves.
Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure Cllr Neil Stanley said “We are very excited to be taking part in Heritage Open Days again this year and celebrating this fantastic hidden treasure that we have here on our doorstep in Eastbourne. It’s a great opportunity for visitors and residents to not only take a look at the brilliant exhibitions and collections held in the museum, but to also navigate through the corridors and tunnels of the Redoubt to see parts that we don’t usually open to the public. I hope as many people as possible take the opportunity to take a Secrets of the Redoubt Tour and appreciate this unique venue.”
Last week the Redoubt Fortress was listed in The Art Fund’s Top Ten Military Museums and highlighted for its extensive military connections with artefacts spanning three collections, including a bugle from the Charge of the Light Brigade. The article concluded that the ‘Redoubt is well worth a visit.’
The Secrets of the Redoubt Tours will be available daily from Thursday – Sunday this week at 10.15am, 12.15pm and 2.15pm and are free with admission to the museum.
