Local people will be consulted on the best location for a new street market in the town centre. This latest step follows a decision by Eastbourne Borough Council to approve the plan for a regular street market.
Initially, the market would be monthly or fortnightly but could become weekly. Suggestions for stalls include a farmer's market, antiques, books and arts and craft stalls that compliment rather than compete with the existing shops.
Leader of the Council, Councillor David Tutt, said:
"As the result of many requests we have been working hard to change the regulations which have previously made a local market impossible. We must now consult residents, business owners, emergency services and transport providers on a new street trading policy that will allow this to be introduced on a regular basis.”
The consultation begins on Friday (30 September) with an online questionnaire available on the council website. People can complete the form online or print it off and send it to the Licensing Manager, 1 Grove Road, Eastbourne, BN21 4TW. Letters will also be accepted.
Councillor Tutt added:
“I’m delighted that so many businesses and local organisations have already indicated their support for a street market and I hope many more will do likewise in the coming weeks.”
