Eastbourne Teams Encouraged to Come Forward for London 2012 Young Games Makers

October 3rd, 2011

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) is on the search for dedicated and passionate 16 to 18 year olds to apply for Young Games Maker roles and Eastbourne is encouraging local schools, teams and clubs to register their interest for this once in a lifetime opportunity.

LOCOG is looking to recruit more than 2,000 young people from across the UK to take up the volunteer roles that will be vital to successfully delivering the Games.

Eastbourne boasts many strong arts, sport and cultural groups as well as being home to several schools and colleges who are part of the Get Set Network and with Young Games Maker applications closing at the end of October, the town is encouraging team leaders to put their groups forward.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure Cllr Neil Stanley said “This is an amazing opportunity for our young people in Eastbourne to be part of the biggest sporting event in British history and I would encourage as many local clubs as possible to apply.

“Next year all eyes around the world will be on Britain and we’re really keen that Eastbourne has links to the Games and benefits from as many opportunities as possible. We have such a wealth of talented groups here on our doorstep in Eastbourne so it’s a wonderful chance for them to put themselves forward and be recognised on an international stage, helping to deliver this world class event.”

Around 250 teams of young people, who must be aged 16 or over on 1 July 2012 and under 18 on 1 January 2012, will make up the Young Games Maker positions joining the adult Games Makers to help stage London 2012.

Applications are open until 31 October 2011 and team leaders, such as teachers, coaches and youth group leaders, are invited to apply and nominate their team of young people for the opportunity. Team sizes range from role to role and can vary between two and 18 people, with a Team Leader on board for every 10 young people.
