5 October 2011

A group for mums and dads and their toddlers received a welcome boost recently after Devonshire Ward councillors agreed to fund brand new soft play equipment.  The parent and toddler group is based at the Salvation Army Citadel in Langney Road and welcomes many local families on Mondays and Wednesdays (10am-11.30am).

In addition to the support for the parent and toddler group, local councillors have allocated some of the £1,328 funding from their ward budget to the purchase of a washing machine, TV, computer and vacuum cleaner for users of the Salvation Army HQ in Eastbourne.

The Salvation Army’s Major David Squirrell said:

"The response from parents has been fantastic. The children love the new equipment and are having a wonderful time using it all.  Parents are able to enjoy a warm and friendly atmosphere and meet other parents within a safe place where children can learn to play and enjoy the facilities."

Councillors in each of the nine wards across Eastbourne have access to funding for one-off community initiatives and improvements. Devonshire councillors also supported the Regency Park Residents Association recently following a request for essential office equipment.

Cllr Steve Wallis said:

“The Salvation Army has been doing fantastic and worthwhile work within Eastbourne for many, many years, often assisting the most vulnerable. I pay tribute to Mr. Squirrell and all the Salvation Army members for their tireless efforts and thank them for the positive contribution they make to the local community.

“The devolved budget scheme was set up to help community groups and I am very pleased that the Devonshire devolved budget funding has been able to assist the Salvation Army to purchase equipment to use within the many groups who rely on their support.”

Residents who would like to suggest a project meriting support should contact their ward councillor.
