Eastbourne’s award-winning contemporary art museum Towner is inviting visitors to enjoy a screening this Friday evening of Self Made, the debut documentary feature film by Turner Prize winning artist Gillian Wearing.
Filmed on location in Newcastle, the film begins with an advert that asks the public: ‘If you were to play a part in a film, would you be yourself or a fictional character?’
Wearing explores whether, in a world with CCTV, reality TV and ‘fictionalised’ documentary turning ordinary people into performers, that reality and fiction become interchangeable commodities.
Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure Cllr Neil Stanley said “We are very excited to have the opportunity to show Self Made by Gillian Wearing at Towner this Friday. The film really does explore who we really are and the social masks we wear every day and it poses some interesting questions. I’d encourage as many people as possible to come along on Friday and enjoy the film screening in Eastbourne’s fantastic gallery space.”
Self Made tells the story of seven people who have been encouraged to explore the hidden sides of their nature and the alter egos and fantasy figures they keep private, and it involved them taking part in a three-week Method acting workshop.
The screening takes place at 7.30pm this Friday, 18 November, and tickets can be booked in advance from Towner for £5 or £4 for concessions.
