Venus Williams enters AEGON International

5 May 2011

Former world number one, Venus Williams, has entered the AEGON International this year.

The five-time Wimbledon women’s singles champion is one of 13 of the world’s top 20 players who have entered the tournament at Devonshire Park, Eastbourne.

Williams is joined by French Open champions Francesca Schiavone and Ana Ivanovic. This year’s Australian Open finalist Na Li is also in the Main Draw alongside Victoria Azarenka.

Last year’s French Open finalist, Sam Stosur, has also entered the AEGON International. The Australian competed last year and made the semi-finals before losing to eventual winner Russian Ekaterina Makarova.

She commented: “I am so excited to be returning to Eastbourne to compete at the AEGON International. I had a great run there last year and am hopeful of going even further this year.”

Gavin Fletcher, AEGON International Tournament Director said: “We promised to deliver world class tennis to Eastbourne, so to attract thirteen of the world’s top twenty, and five of the world’s top ten, is a real coup for the tournament. I think it’s fantastic that Venus has entered this year as it promises to be another thrilling week of high class women’s tennis.”

The AEGON International runs from June 11-18 2011 at Devonshire Park in Eastbourne. Tickets are priced from £14 and can be bought online at the AEGON International website or by calling 0844 209 7350.
