Step Into Elizabeth Magill’s World at Towner

18 May 2011

This weekend Eastbourne’s award-winning art gallery Towner is inviting visitors to find out more about Elizabeth Magill in a special free weekend celebration of its current exhibition, which is the UK premiere of the artist’s latest works.

Green Light Wanes, on now at Towner until 19 June, is the UK’s first display of Magill’s new paintings and has already attracted glowing reviews from visitors.

This weekend visitors can delve deeper into Magill’s world with A Poet’s Perspective and film screenings on Saturday and a Family Day on Sunday offering children the chance to contribute to a huge installation inspired by Magill’s beautiful and intricate paintings.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure, Cllr Neil Stanley said “We are very excited to be able to showcase Elizabeth Magill’s latest works for the first time in the UK and this weekend’s events make the display even more special by offering the chance for visitors to really interact and engage with the artist’s paintings. The Poet’s Perspective talk on Saturday promises to be a really entertaining insight into Magill’s works, while the Family Day on Sunday is a great chance for families to get creative! With Towner just a 5-minute walk from the Festival Village at Eastbourne Cycling Festival, I’d encourage visitors to experience all that’s on offer this weekend!”

Poet and art critic Cherry Smyth will be discussing how Magill’s aesthetic has expanded to include both the ironic and comic, repositioning landscape and the figure in Irish representational painting. Free to attend, visitors are encouraged to book in advance and guarantee their place to listen to this talk at 2pm on Saturday.

Sunday is all about families at Towner with a free drop-in event for all ages from 11am – 3pm. Artist Karen Taylor will be on hand to help visitors add to a giant installation, drawing, painting and making Magill’s paintings come alive!

Visitors will also be invited to watch free international film screenings across the weekend, including Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams, Chris Marker’s La Jetée and Gideon Koppel’s Sleep Furiously on Saturday, and family films Miyazaki’s My Neighbour Totoro and Âhlin’s Dunderklumpen! on Sunday.

The film screenings will start from 11am on both days and rotate throughout the day.
