Eastbourne Borough Council Display Backs National Food Safety Campaign

31 May 2011

Eastbourne Borough Council is backing a national campaign to promote safe and healthy cooking as part of Food Safety Week.

The theme of the week, which begins on Monday June 6, will look at what goes on behind closed doors to see what people really do in their own homes when preparing and cooking food.

The Council is supporting the Food Standards Agency in its campaign to dispel common myths about food safety by promoting a display in the council's Customer Contact Centre at 1 Grove Road, Eastbourne, during the week.

People who visit the display can pick up free recipe cards and leaflets about how to prepare and cook food safely at home.

Food poisoning cases surge during the summer months. Just ten invisible bugs in food can multiply to 1,000 in six hours, 100,000 in less than ten hours and to more than a million in 12 hours. And when it is very hot, bugs can multiply even faster.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for the Environment Cllr Steve Wallis said: “With the summer fast approaching, people may be planning to make the most of the sunshine in Eastbourne and hold a BBQ or picnic. A hot, sunny day should be an enjoyable day out for the family, but if people are not careful, the day could be spoilt by food poisoning.”

Follow the good practice advice available at the council's Food Safety web page and make sure food poisoning doesn’t spoil your BBQ or picnic.
