Celebrating their current War Stories exhibition as part of the Eastbourne Festival, the Redoubt Fortress is inviting visitors and residents to meet artist Jade Marczynski this Saturday and hear her speak about her collection of hand embroidered pieces inspired by memories of those who survived the Second World War.
From 11am – 12.30pm on Saturday, Redoubt visitors can book for a special question and answer session with recent textile graduate Jade, whose embroidery exhibition War Stories is on until 15 May.
With the Redoubt’s main exhibition this year, Stitch For Victory, exploring the contribution that stitching made to lives during World War Two, War Stories compliments this by showcasing intricate pieces that have been created based on memories from those who lived and fought during this time.
War Stories is on now at the Napoleonic Fortress on Eastbourne seafront and runs until 15 May as part of this year’s Eastbourne Festival, which celebrates the best of art, music, culture and entertainment that the town has to offer.
Eastbourne Borough Council Museums Curator Fran Stovold said “We are very excited and honoured to have Jade visit us for this special event this weekend and offer visitors the chance to discover the inspiration behind Jade’s works in an informal question and answer session. There are a fantastic range of pieces on display for War Stories and I’d encourage as many people as possible to pop down and take a look before 15 May!”
Stitch for Victory offers a unique insight into the contribution that needlework made to life during the Second World War and explores an angle of life during this period that is rarely spoken about.
Visitors can discover how stitching was used to steady nerves in the air raid shelters and how prisoners of war documented their experiences with secret needles and thread. This is the first time that artefacts, documents, and memories have been brought together for an unusual, evocative and inspiring display.
The War Stories Meet the Artist event takes place this Saturday 7 May and costs £5 per adult or £3.50 for concessions. Visitors will also have the chance to purchase one of Jade’s pieces and take home an original piece of contemporary craft.
