Wanderings through Latest Cafe Projects at Towner

Judith Alder at Towner Cafe Projects

7 March 2011

The award-winning Towner is welcoming a new Eastbourne artist to exhibit in its second floor café this month as its successful Café Projects exhibition continues, showcasing the work of artists from the region.

Judith Alder is an artist based in Eastbourne, who as well as practicing as an artist, also co-founded Blue Monkey Studio in the town, and in partnership with the other Blue Monkey artists, has co-curated and project managed various artist-led projects and events across Sussex.

Voyages of Discovery and Swept Away are both works from Judith’s 2010 exhibition Wanderings and they explore the notion of journeys, landscape and location as metaphors for human experience. Using landscapes in and around Eastbourne, Towner visitors will be able to browse and buy Judith’s work, which is also held in several collections around the UK.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure, Cllr Neil Stanley said “Café Projects is continuing to be a great success for Towner offering brilliant exposure for East Sussex artists with tens of thousands of visitors to the gallery each year. Already hosting a packed programme of major exhibitions by international and iconic artists, Café Projects is a brilliant and natural progression to showcase works inspired by the region’s landscape. With some fantastic events and workshops coming up at Towner over the next month, I’d encourage all visitors to make sure they stop off at the café too and take a look at Judith’s thought provoking photographs.”

Judith describes the Wanderings journeys as ‘both real and imaginary, on a variety of scales’, which pass through landscapes ‘where scratches and scars appear as tracks and trails; cracks become crevasses; rocks become rugged peaks and islands; a puddle is an ocean.’ The works are on display now for Café Projects until 31 March.

Judith said “It's great to have the chance to have my work seen by a wide audience in a prestigious gallery in company with work by national and international artists. I look forward to many more opportunities for East Sussex artists to build relationships with Towner in coming years and believe that this positive interaction will contribute to a vibrant and forward-thinking arts community in Eastbourne.”

With the East Sussex Open also coming up at Towner this spring, visitors will have the chance to browse and buy many works created by artists from the region.
