Work to establish a single waste contract covering most of the East Sussex region received the backing of councillors last night. The newly constituted Joint Waste Committee (JWC) will oversee work to procure the contract by April 2013.
Councillors Steve Wallis, Gill Mattock and Margaret Bannister were formally appointed to sit on the JWC.
In addition to Eastbourne Borough Council, representatives from Hastings Borough Council, Rother District Council, Wealden District Council and East Sussex County Council will have seats on the committee.
A single waste contract for East Sussex will offer each authority significant savings in the overall contract value and deliver increased levels of service across Eastbourne in relation to refuse and recycling.
Cabinet endorsed Rother District Council as the authority that will administer the project, although the role does not include the authority to appoint the contractor or decide the waste contract specification.
Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Cleansing and Recycling, Councillor Steve Wallis, said: “By working in partnership with neighbouring authorities our buying power is that much greater than if we managed a procurement exercise on our own. With so many similar areas of service delivery, it makes great sense for councils to collaborate and work more closely together to expose efficiencies, that potentially benefit local residents both financially and with an increase in the quality of the service.”
