Redoubt Fortress Takes to the Airwaves for International Museums Weekend

16 June 2011

The Southdown Amateur Radio Club is taking over Eastbourne’s Redoubt Fortress this Saturday for International Museums Weekend 2011 offering visitors the chance to take to the airwaves themselves and make contact with radio amateurs and museums around the world.

2011 is the 10th year of International Museums Weekend with amateur radio stations across the globe broadcasting live from museums and offering members of the public the chance to get behind the scenes and find out what it’s like to broadcast live.

The Southdown Amateur Radio Club will set up their station inside the Redoubt Fortress from 10am – 5pm and visitors will also be able to browse a small display of vintage radio equipment with artefacts dating back to wartime, as well as have a go at sending Morse code.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, Cllr Neil Stanley said “We are very excited to welcome the Southdown Amateur Radio Club to the Redoubt this weekend and hope that visitors will take the chance to take to the mic themselves and help the Club make contact with other stations broadcasting all over the world for International Museums Weekend. The Redoubt has a fantastic programme of activities taking place this year in addition to its major Stitch for Victory exhibition and I’d encourage visitors to come along this weekend for this very special event.”

The Southdown Amateur Radio Society was established in 1967 and stages special events in and around Eastbourne throughout the year. They hope to make contact with stations as far as America, Greece, and Australia for International Museums Weekend.

Visitors to the radio event this weekend will also have the chance to browse the Redoubt’s major 2011 exhibition Stitch for Victory, which explores the contribution that needlework made to lives during the Second World War.

The radio event is free with admission to the museum. For more information on what’s on at the Redoubt, including the Armed Forces Weekend coming up next week, go to the Eastbourne Museums website or call 01323 410300.
