Eastbourne suffered little disruption to its recycling and refuse collections over Christmas, bucking national trends, with contractors, once again providing an excellent service.
While some people in the UK did not have their waste collected for up to six weeks, it was ‘business as usual’ for Eastbourne. Residents of the town were able to continue enjoying their recycling, garden waste and refuse collections with little or no disruption to their normal schedule.
Councillor Wallis, portfolio holder for the Environment, added: “The piles of rubbish witnessed in streets up and down the country over Christmas were appalling; we worked very hard to avoid a similar situation here in Eastbourne.
I would especially like to thank all the crews at SITA and Wealden District Council who worked through the holidays to maintain the high level of service witnessed by the town’s residents.
Eastbourne Borough Council has also recently had the results back from its annual “Environmental Questionnaire”, which showed that 96% of residents were satisfied with their refuse collections, and 86% were satisfied with their recycling. This figures have improved from last years data.
This is in line with the fact that Eastbourne now has the widest range of materials recycled at kerbside anywhere in East Sussex. Residents of the town can now recycle paper (including yellow pages), cans, glass, plastic bottles, household batteries, and clothes and shoes in their green boxes; and garden waste and cardboard in their green wheelie bins or sacks.
In 2009/10 Eastbourne residents recycled over 11,000 tonnes of waste, the vast majority of this being shipped to local contractors who recycling back into re-usable products.
