LOCAL dignitaries gathered to
celebrate the official unveiling of the prestigious Green Flag Award at Princes
Park.
Princes Park became
the town’s first park to win the coveted Green Flag Award in July for its
exceptional standard of management by Eastbourne Borough Council and the
Friends of Princes Park.
Eastbourne Mayor
Cllr Carolyn Heaps was joined by Jacky Mullender, chair of the Friends if
Princes Park, as the Green Flag was raised on its gleaming new pole at the park
entrance.
Cllr Heaps said: “I
would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to achieve
this tremendous award and for making Princes Park a place the whole town can be
very proud of.”
Jacky Mullender
said: “This award is the culmination of years of hard work to turn Princes Park
into a truly outstanding public open space, and it is wonderful to think of
residents and visitors to Eastbourne enjoying the park’s full potential.”
Eastbourne Borough
Council is planning to invest further funds at the park in the coming months.
2011 was a busy year
for Princes Park as it hosted the town’s Royal Wedding celebrations on a giant
screen, was the venue for Magnificent Motors and will be flying even higher
next year with the introduction of a hot air balloon.
Green Flag judges
visited a packed Princes Park in May to witness first hand how popular the park
is with residents and visitors and to hear how the Friends were working in
partnership with the council to deliver improvements.
The park is one of a
number of parks and green spaces receiving the Green Flag Award this year,
ensuring that even more people now have access to well-managed, high-quality
green spaces.
In 2011, 1,288 parks
and green spaces around the UK
will fly either the Green Flag or Community Award, a sign that the value of
green space is widely acknowledged as vital to communities.
