A Tribute to Abba, MG South Downs Run & Walk 10 in Eastbourne

Devonshire Park Mamma Mia

August 31st, 2011.

The UK’s sunniest place is looking forward to another bumper weekend of events in Eastbourne, including a Tribute to Abba with the chance to enjoy live music and a big screen showing of sing-along favourite Mamma Mia in the beautiful setting of Devonshire Park.

This Saturday, Sovereign FM are teaming up with Eastbourne Borough Council to host a brand new event at the town’s famous tennis ground in tribute to one of the most successful acts in music history. Abba fans can enjoy a performance from an Abba tribute band before watching Mamma Mia on the big screen, the latest in a string of popular big screen showings in Eastbourne this year. Go to Sovereign FM's website to find out how to book.

For tennis fans there is chance to catch the last tournament of the grass court season at Devonshire Park with semi finals on Friday and finals on Saturday in the South of England Championships, a Grade 2 ITF Tournament. Over 340 players will have played in 28 competitions through the week. Admittance to the grounds is free for spectators and play starts at 10am.

This weekend also promises the return of the MG South Downs Run on Sunday as dozens of MG and Sprite owners journey through the South Downs National Park from Winchester to Eastbourne seafront. Visitors are invited to bring a picnic to the Western Lawns on Sunday afternoon and admire the fine display of vehicles with a Big Band playing music from the 40s.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure, Cllr Neil Stanley said “We really are enjoying a packed summer here in Eastbourne with back to back weekends crammed full of brilliant events and this weekend is no exception. The Abba tribute event promises to be a great new addition to the events at Devonshire Park and with Bandstand concerts, seafront walks and more, there’s certainly plenty of reasons to enjoy a visit to the south coast!”

This Saturday Marie Curie Cancer Care is inviting visitors and residents to enjoy an evening stroll along Eastbourne’s glorious seafront promenade and support their Walk 10 event, a 10km walk to raise money for the charity. Walkers will set off along the seafront at 6pm and on their return will be greeted with a host of entertainment, including live music, stilt walkers, acrobats and light displays with the chance to enjoy a picnic and refreshments.

This weekend also promises another round of concerts at Eastbourne Bandstand, including The Greatest Take That Tribute back by popular demand on Friday evening for their second performance of the season. Battle Town Band will take to the stage on Sunday evening for a Night on the Proms Concert promising a true sense of British patriotism.

For something a little more arty, head to Towner, Eastbourne’s award-winning art museum, on Saturday and listen to an artist’s talk at 2pm by Jill Townsley, an exhibiting artist in Towner’s current Compulsive, Obsessive, Repetitive exhibition.
