The Art of Giving – Annual Schools Project & Exhibition

26 April 2011

Towner’s second annual schools’ project and exhibition has grown substantially following the success of last year and this year, Towner has been delighted to welcome over 800 pupils from 15 schools to take part.

Since February schools have been visiting Towner’s Art Store to view a selection of works that can now be seen on display in the Collection Gallery’s latest exhibition The Art of Giving. Visitors to Towner will see how the pupils have been inspired by Robert Tavener, Duncan Grant, Eric Ravilious and many more.

Towner’s annual schools project and exhibition is open to any school that wishes to participate and has attracted infant, primary, SEN and secondary schools from Eastbourne, across East Sussex and as far as Kent.

After studying the art works in the store with gallery staff and their teachers the pupils returned to school to create their own response for visitors to enjoy. The young people’s art work has been installed as large gifts, a celebration of giving for Towner visitors to enjoy.

Teacher Brenda Cusack from St. Thomas a Becket Infants School said “The children were involved in last year’s Towner project and we were delighted to see that it was running again this year. Both staff and children thoroughly enjoyed visiting the stores of the gallery and all pupils at St. Thomas a Becket Infants School had lots of ideas that they wanted to share. The Towner project is a fantastic opportunity for children to explore art and for local schools to share their work with the community. The children have been very excited at the prospect of becoming ‘true artists’ and for their work to be exhibited in a major new gallery!”

This year’s annual schools project and exhibition has been kindly funded by The Friends of The Towner and Towner would like to thank them for their ongoing support.

Pupils, teachers and parents are invited to the exhibition opening on 5 May from 3:30pm - 6:30pm and the exhibition will be open to the public 6 May – 5 June 2011.
