Eastbourne Joins 30 Days of Cycling

1 April 2011

An avid group of Eastbourne cyclists are joining 30 Days of Biking this April, a social-media centric event that brings together more than 1,500 bike riders around the world.

Already turning the events calendar green from 21-22 May with the brand new Eastbourne Cycling Festival, keen cyclists from the UK’s sunniest place are also backing the 30 Days of Biking phenomenon this month with a series of group rides.

Issuing one simple challenge: Bike somewhere every day during April, 30 Days of Biking uses popular social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Flickr, and others, to encourage cyclists to document their journeys online and join a worldwide community of likeminded people.

An Eastbourne Borough Council spokesperson said “30 Days of Biking sounds like an excellent initiative and it’s great that we have so many enthusiastic cyclists here in Eastbourne. With our new Eastbourne Cycling Festival taking place in just a couple of months time, we are very excited to encourage residents and visitors to get on their bike and make the most of the fantastic landscape on Eastbourne’s doorstep. 30 Days of Biking is an excellent environmentally-friendly and healthy way to get ready for the town’s Cycling Festival and we hope everyone will be out on 21-22 May taking part in the various biking activities going on.”

30 Days of Biking was created last year by Patrick Stephenson and Zachariah Shaap from Minneapolis and using only blood, sweat, bike grease and twitter, the challenge has reached more than 87 countries across the globe and Eastbourne is one town amongst hundreds encouraging cycling during April.

A series of group rides will be taking place in Eastbourne, including the first that will take place today, 1 April, organised by the Tri Store and taking in a loop to Birling Gap and back. Further Eastbourne group rides will be promoted via the 30 Days of Biking Facebook page.

Eastbourne Cycling Festival will be launched next month joining the town’s busy events programme from 21-22 May. Taking place on the seafront’s Western Lawns, the event is being organised in association with The Tri Store and is shaping up to be an action-packed weekend with road races, Cyclosportive, time trials, family rides, mountain biking, cappuccino ride, unicycle display, stunt bikes, wattbike challenge, Rollapaluza and much more!
