6 September 2010 One of Eastbourne’s main shopping districts has been given a makeover ready for the busy Christmas retail season with old railings removed, brand new maps installed, and the repainted lamp columns have been treated with seagull deterrent.
Earlier this year part of Terminus Road was looking tired and neglected but Eastbourne Borough Council’s Economic Development team have brought the stretch of Terminus Road, which runs from the seafront down to Debenhams, back to life ready to entice shoppers over the autumn months.
Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, Councillor David Tutt said “Terminus Road is a key route running through the town centre linking our beautiful seafront with our retail offer. We are working hard to ensure that our town centre remains attractive despite the economic downturn using successful initiatives such as the artwork in empty shop windows to keep shoppers coming back. With signs of a recovery on the way, it is excellent news that the work on the top end of Terminus Toad has been completed and we are keen to encourage our seafront visitors to explore the whole of Terminus Road and the town centre.”
This month marks the completion of a project to make the top end of Terminus Road more pedestrian friendly and create a natural link between the seafront and main shopping hub.
The railings that used to run from the old Co-Op to the seafront have been taken away and four new town centre maps have been introduced at four key locations to show visitors what else is nearby and pinpoint main attractions.
The neglected and mismatched lamp columns between Debenhams and TJ Hughes have all been painted black to match those in other parts of the town and seagull deterrents have been used making it much easier to repair and replace the light bowls. Home to several restaurants, the regeneration of the lamp posts on Terminus Road will be important for attracting diners to the area who are looking to eat out in the daytime and evenings too.
These improvements have received very positive feedback from the local traders and they welcome future initiatives to improve the street scene.
With many shops starting to receive their first Christmas deliveries and with the move from summer to autumn/winter stock, the Council hope that the recent improvements will make Eastbourne well placed to benefit from the busy retail season ahead and make the top end of Terminus Road more attractive to residents and visitors.
