The 'South Street Shuffle' gets an Ale Trail

21 September 2010

This weekend promises a traditional Eastbourne experience as local publicans join together to revive the South Street Shuffle, an infamous pub crawl taking drinkers through Little Chelsea.

The South Street Shuffle hails back to the 60s and with people still talking about it today, five pubs have clubbed together to re-launch the ale trail where visitors can enjoy a pint of good old English ale, winding their way from Bibendum to The Dolphin, Dew Drop Inn, Maxims and The Eagle and be duly rewarded with a £5 food voucher to spend at any of the pubs.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, Cllr Neil Stanley said “It is very exciting that the South Street Shuffle is being re-launched for the noughties with today’s generations able to enjoy a tradition that dates back to the famous mods and rockers era. Little Chelsea is a fantastic part of our town centre and a hidden gem for visitors to discover and it’s brilliant that these local businesses are working together to encourage people to spend time in this part of the town.”

The trail has been welcomed and supported by the local CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) branch and will be officially opened for business by the Mayor of Eastbourne, Cllr Carolyn Heaps this Saturday, 25 September.

The pubs will be celebrating the launch day by offering an extra special range of real ales, food and entertainment throughout the event. Every pint of ale sold on the launch day will come with the chance to win a mini barrel of Harvey’s Sussex Best Bitter.

The launch event will start at 11am and run throughout the day and all the pubs are family friendly, making the South Street Shuffle an alternative day out for everyone.

Real ale lovers can take on the South Street Shuffle at any time and leaflets with details of the trail will be available in all five pubs.

With Eastbourne Beer Festival, taking place from 7-9 October, just a couple of weeks away, the South Street Shuffle offers the perfect opportunity to sample some traditional English ale in preparation for the packed event at the Winter Garden.
