Eastbourne Cycle Routes - Have Your Say

People in Eastbourne are invited to have their say about two proposed new cycle routes in the town.

East Sussex County Council and Eastbourne Borough Council have been working together on the Seafront Cycle Scheme and the Horsey Cycle Route, which we believe will improve the safety of cyclists and help to reduce local congestion.

The Seafront Cycle Scheme will run from the foot of the Downs at Holywell to the Wish Tower. It will involve cyclists sharing the existing footpath with pedestrians on the seaward side of King Edwards Parade.

The Horsey Cycle Route provides a continuous cycle route that links Eastbourne train station in the town centre with Langney roundabout. The first section of the route runs from the station to Ringwood Road, and from here alongside the Horsey Sewer in Churchdale Road and onto Lottbridge Drove. The last section runs from Lottbridge Drove to Langney roundabout.

To ensure everyone in the town has the chance to see the proposals, public exhibitions are being held on:

  • Friday 15 October between 2pm and 7pm and Saturday 16 October between 10am and 4pm, in the Court Room at Eastbourne Town Hall

  • Thursday 21 October between 4.30pm and 7.30pm, at Stafford Junior School in Ringwood Road

A questionnaire and more information will be available at the exhibition venues and online at our website: www.eastsussex.gov.uk/haveyoursay.

Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment at East Sussex County Council, said: “Cycling plays an important part in reducing congestion and improving access to services and I would encourage more people to get on their bikes for health reasons too. It is important local people have a say about these two proposed new routes, so make sure you come along to one of the exhibitions or log on to our website and tell us your views.”

Councillor Steve Wallis Cabinet Member for the Environment at Eastbourne Borough Council, said: “This is a positive step forward and complements the wider plan to create a safe town-wide cycle network. Routes for this cycle network are currently being developed by Eastbourne Borough Council, East Sussex Council and local cycle group Bespoke in conjunction with the Community Environment Partnership. Final routes for the cycle network will form the Eastbourne Cycle Strategy that is due to be published for consultation next year.”
