The Emma Mason Gallery in Eastbourne is celebrating the life of renowned Eastbourne printmaker and illustrator Robert Tavener with a brand new book being launched this winter.

Emma Mason represents the artist’s estate and together with her husband Richard has penned the first book on the artist featuring over 100 of his colour plates and a foreword written by Tavener’s daughter Mary MacAlister.

With a series of Tavener’s prints also being added to the Towner Café Projects this week, Emma Mason is keen to promote the work of the artist who thrived on inspiration from the South Downs landscape and English architecture, to both residents and visitors in Eastbourne.

Teaming up with VisitEastbourne.com, fans of Tavener’s work can enter an online competition next week for the chance to win a signed copy of ‘Oh, Mr Tavener, I wish I had the original!’ by Emma and Richard Mason plus a set of greetings cards.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure, Cllr Neil Stanley said “The book written by Emma and Richard Mason is a fantastic celebration of Robert Tavener’s wonderful prints and illustrations, many of which, feature the beautiful South Downs countryside on our doorstep. There really is a wealth of artistic talent in Eastbourne and the current Tavener exhibition at the Emma Mason Gallery is a great showcase for the artist who has left a great printmaking legacy for our town.”

From next week as part of VisitEastbourne.com’s festive giveaways, culture vultures will have the chance to win a copy of the Tavener book, signed by Emma and Richard Mason as well as Mary MacAlister. The winner will also receive a set of the Tavener greetings cards, available from the Emma Mason Gallery.

Emma Mason said “We have really enjoyed writing the book about Sussex artist Robert Tavener. With the book and the exhibition of his prints, more people will be able to enjoy and appreciate Tavener ‘s beautiful work.”

The exhibition ‘Celebrating a lifetime of printmaking’ is on now at the Emma Mason Gallery in Cornfield Terrace until 11 December and the book, priced £20, is available to buy from the gallery or online at the Emma Mason website.
