Greens café in Seaside is being given £2000 from the Devonshire Councillors' ward budget to help set up a not-for-profit internet café providing free internet access and support to local people who do not have computers in their homes.
The money will help fund computers and software, desks and chairs and security grills to make the property safer.
The café owners have been talking to people who live in the nearby area and found that many do not have computers to be able to prepare CV’s and search for jobs.
Activities will be provided for young children while their mums make free use of the computers. Older people are also being looked after as the computers have systems to help them gain confidence using the internet.
Cllr Margaret Bannister said, “The Devonshire Ward Councillors have been impressed by the work of the Greens Cafe to create a facility that brings together members of the local community in a supportive, child-friendly environment. Free access to the internet will benefit many less advantaged members of our neighbourhood, allowing them to access vital services. Young mums can surf the net while their children play safely; beside them, senior citizens can explore the internet, with helpful support.”
