Find Out About New Extra Care Facility

24 November 2010

Residents in Eastbourne are getting an early opportunity to see plans for the new Extra Care housing scheme, for older people with care and support needs, in Pembury Road, Langney, which is due for completion early in 2012.

Eastbourne Borough Council, cabinet spokesperson for housing Councillor Margaret Bannister said, “This site was previously owned by EBC and ESCC.  It offered an ideal and unique opportunity for the two authorities to work with Saxon Weald and Denne Construction, to develop a much needed modern Extra Care Scheme.  I am also really pleased that this project will contribute to the regeneration of this area of Langney.  It will provide high quality facilities for residents, assisting them to live, independently, in their own homes.”

On the 27th November between 10am and 4pm staff from Saxon Weald Housing Association, East Sussex County Council Adult Social Care and Denne construction will all be at Langney Shopping centre highlighting the work carried out so far and how the project will look when it is completed early next year.

On the day people will be able to find out more about what an Extra Care facility is and who may be eligible to rent one of these affordable self-contained flats.  There are 62 one and two bedroom flats with a restaurant and other communal facilities, some of which will be available for use by the local community.

David Standfast, Chief Executive of Saxon Weald, the charitable housing association that is building and will manage the scheme, said: “Extra Care housing gives frail older people the care and support they need, along with the independence of their own front door.

“Denne, the building company working with us on this scheme, has already built two excellent Extra Care schemes for us in East Sussex, and I am confident that Eastbourne’s will be built to the same high standards.”

Pictures of how the development that will be known as Cranbrook will look internally and externally will all be on show and the developer will be on site to discuss any issues relating to the building work that is taking place.

East Sussex County Council Lead Member for Adult Social Care, Cllr Bill Bentley said, “This new scheme shows how we are providing modern, 21st century care to meet growing demand. Local people will have an opportunity to see how we are looking after those who need support in their own community.”

Extra Care Schemes enable residents to live in a self contained flat, while receiving support from carers.  The carers will visit residents on a regular basis, according to their need.  The flats will only be available to people who need this type of extra care.
