10 November 2010
Representatives from across East Sussex will come together in Eastbourne to discuss Emergency Planning for the community and will hear from speakers who have dealt with real emergencies in recent years.
The Worshipful the Mayor of Eastbourne will welcome the Conference to Eastbourne’s Town Hall on the 18 November, she says, “I feel it is really important for every local authority to plan for potential emergencies. In East Sussex we have had a history of flooding in Lewes, Uckfield and Pevensey. We need to have the plans in place to safeguard our local community and if disaster strikes the ability to respond and recover quickly.”
Guest speaker for the evening will be Graham Thompson from Keswick in Cumbria who will talk about his experiences during the 2009 flooding and how they built up their community volunteer teams and how they proved invaluable.
Also Col Anthony Kimber (Retired), who has a distinguished military background and involvement with resilience in the South East, will talk about his work with the establishment of REACT, a team of volunteers for Rye.
Other aims of the evening will be to raise awareness of how local communities in boroughs, districts, towns and parishes can support the emergency services and local authorities during an emergency and in particular where evacuation and shelter is the issue.
