Eastbourne’s award-winning gallery is taking art into its café this autumn as Towner launches Café Projects, a series of exhibitions showcasing the work of East Sussex based artists.

Kate Graham is the first local artist to exhibit in the Towner Café and visitors can browse and buy a selection of Kate’s photos inspired by Alice in Wonderland and her ability to climb through the looking glass and explore a familiar but curious world.

The photographer, who lives and works in Eastbourne, describes her work as discovering ‘intriguing new places’ and says ‘the images are like riddles’, inviting visitors to really look closely at the subjects.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism Cllr Neil Stanley said “We are very excited to launch Café Projects and make the most of the fantastic space that Towner offers. We already host a top programme of major exhibitions by international and iconic artists but the Café Projects offers a brilliant way for Towner to be able to showcase the work of some great local artists and exhibit works inspired by our East Sussex surroundings. I’d encourage all Towner visitors to stop off at the café and enjoy a light bite as well as the chance to view and buy Kate’s photos.”

Kate’s exhibition of photos is on now in the Towner Café until 28 November and the photographer is pleased for the opportunity and exposure it offers.

Kate said “I think of Towner as one of Eastbourne’s brightest places. We are very privileged to have such a fine gallery bringing superb exhibitions to our town, and welcoming the work of local artists and community events alongside them. To have my work shown at Towner is a thrill and a great honour.”

This autumn Kate’s showcase joins Towner’s major exhibition ARTIST ROOMS that shows works by one of the 20th century’s most significant photographers Robert Mapplethorpe, as well as Here, There, Everywhere, a Collection Gallery exhibition that features artists such as Eric Ravilious, Grayson Perry and Tracey Emin.

With applications opening this week for the chance to exhibit in the second East Sussex Open taking place next year to coincide with the Eastbourne Festival; more local artists have the chance to see their works on display at Towner.
