19 May 2010 A huge new ramp is being installed on the seafront this week as the final pieces of work are carried out ready to re-launch the Sovereign Skate Park in just a couple of weeks.
Extreme sport lovers in Eastbourne can look forward to an exciting summer as the Council’s £75k investment, boosted by a £35k grant from Play Pathfinders through East Sussex County Council, to completely refurbish the popular seafront Skate Park is set to be completed by the end of May.
This week, users of the facility are pleased to see a giant new ramp put in place at the Park, the result of an ongoing partnership between the Council and the local skating community.
Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure, Cllr Neil Stanley said “We are very pleased that the finishing touches are now being made to the Sovereign Skate Park and hope that users will be impressed by the refurbished facility. We have worked closely with local skaters throughout the project so that we deliver a final product that meets their needs and ensures that the Skate Park not only impresses the local community, but also becomes an attraction for skaters from along the south coast.”
Eastbourne Borough Council have worked with Rampchild, a specialist design and build company from Kettering, to deliver the improvements at the Skate Park, with local skaters meeting with the various contractors to ensure that the new equipment meets their needs.
From the early stages of the project, Skate Park users were asked to share their views on what they wanted to see happen to the site on the seafront with regular meetings taking place at the Sovereign Centre.
From removing all of the old equipment and resurfacing the site to make it extra smooth for speed and stunts, to building the new purpose-made ramps, Eastbourne Skate Park is set to promise a unique experience when the final work is completed at the end of the month.
With Eastbourne Extreme taking place from 17-18 July, the extreme sport event will offer the perfect opportunity for the town to show off its new skating facility and attract skaters, BMXers and skateboarders all keen to try out the specialist purpose built equipment on offer.
