Eastbourne’s Economy Boosted By Language Students

More than 25,000 language students are in their final preparations for summer learning trips to Eastbourne this year.  The youngsters from as close to Eastbourne as Northern France and long haul from Korea, China, and South America will stay on average two and a half weeks in the town boosting the economy by spending in local shops and restaurants and staying with host families.

Eastbourne Borough Council Representative on OSAC, Councillor Neil Stanley says, “We are delighted that so many students come to Eastbourne, we know that many act as great ambassadors for the town and their friends and relations come back again and again.  One language school has just celebrated 50 years of teaching English in Eastbourne.  By working closely with the schools we are able to help students make the most of their holiday.”

£17 million is generated for the town throughout the year by student organisations bringing youngsters to the town.  Arrangements for the students are overseen by The Overseas Student Advisory Committee (OSAC), which is a partnership between the language schools, Sussex Police, the Chamber of Commerce, transport providers, and the Council

To help the language students enjoy their stay they are briefed on such matters as how to queue, reminded to say please and thank you and not to block the pavements in large groups. All students under the age of 18 are expected to be at home with their host family by 11.00 pm.

Safety of the students is key while they are staying in Eastbourne and Sussex police has a dedicated officer who specialises in working with language schools to ensure their students have a safe and enjoyable stay.

The OSAC group meets regularly throughout the year to ensure close contact between partners so that the welfare of students is of the highest priority.  If members of the public would like to know more about OSAC contact the Chair on 01323 415030 during office hours only.
