Don’t be afraid of the dark…
Fri 5 – Sun 7 March 2010
Get ready to unleash your dark side this weekend, as The Dark Weekend takes over Towner, inspired by The Dark Monarch exhibition. Expect a magical weekend of dark film, activities, workshops and conversation, with events for all ages and interests!
Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, Cllr Susan Morris said “I’m really excited aboutall the fantastic things that are happening at Towner this weekend – and with such a wide range of magical and mysterious activities, and free events for young people and families, there is truly something for everyone.
“Whether you want to learn more about mythology and mysticism in art or create some supernatural art of your own, dance the night away at The Dark Silent Disco or enjoy a spine-chilling film double bill, look no further than Towner to add some magic to your weekend!”
The festivities kick off on Friday night with a film double bill, The Dark Screening, showing Séance on a Wet Afternoon and The Wicker Man. There will also be a special screening of a short film created at last weekend’s occult film workshop with Alexander Brattell. With cabaret style seating surrounded by an enchanted fairy-lit forest, and a pay bar including traditional cider and perry, this promises to be a atmospheric evening! (for 18yrs and above).
Saturday’s events include a walk and talk through The Dark Monarch exhibition with photographer and lecturer Alexander Brattell, and a special screening of Your actions are my dreams by artist Linder Sterling, specially commissioned for The Dark Monarch exhibition. Thisis a stunning film which weaves traditional Guise dancing into a mythological assemblage connected to the ancient customs and rituals of the land. This event will include an introductory talk by Susan Lamb, Head of Learning at Tate St Ives.
Saturday evening will see the club phenomenon that has been sweeping the UK descend upon Eastbourne for one night only – but with a dark twist! The Dark Silent Disco is a free event for young people aged 12 – 16 yrs, with DJs, VJs, glowsticks, spooky photography, glow graffiti and more. If you feel like dressing up, Elizabethan Punk is the theme.
On Sunday families and people of all ages are invited to help fill Towner’s Exhibition Hall with a tribe of fantastical people and creatures, led by artist Louise Bristow. This is a free event, so there’s no need to book – just drop in at any point throughout the day.
The weekend rounds off with One Dark Sunday Afternoon, an afternoon of conversation, music and dance inspired by themes of spirituality, faith and folklore, with contributors from Eastbourne Pagan Circle and Towner’s public programmes. The finale is a live music and dance performance from Hunters Moon, Eastbourne’s very own Morris side who dance the Border style, wearing the traditional black and silver tatters.
