Join Alice in Wonderland in Eastbourne

10th March 2010

The eagerly anticipated 3D adaptation of Alice in Wonderland hit cinema screen this weekend and visitors to Eastbourne can enjoy a fantasy themed adventure of their own with a seafront trail inspired by the story’s author who spent 19 summer holidays at the resort.

The annual Eastbourne Festival, organised and promoted by The Eastbourne Festival Community Interest Company, kicks off in just a month’s time with a MarshmellowNightArtTrail along the seafront on Saturday 3 April, this year themed by the popular children’s story.

Visitors joining the trail can enjoy a taste of Carroll’s magical tales, which still enchant the south east resort today, with a Twilight hat procession leading the parade along the promenade to the Bandstand where a mad hatters tea party, static art pieces, story telling and a short performance will bring the seafront to life.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, Cllr Susan Morris said “Alice in Wonderland is such a wonderful story and with the release of the new film this year, it’s brilliant timing for Eastbourne to host an event inspired by the author. The Eastbourne Festival offers such a wide variety of events this year and with the MarshmellowNightArtTrail getting the three weeks of festivities underway, there is certainly lots to look forward to in April.”

It’s not just Johnny Depp who will get to play the Mad Hatter this spring as free hat making workshops are taking place at various schools in Eastbourne encouraging children to join in with the Festival events.

There’s no excuse for visitors not to join in either. Taking place on the Easter weekend, visitors can head to the LifeboatMuseum at 7.30pm and join in with the free trail leading to one of Eastbourne’s most iconic landmarks.

With plenty more events coming up as part of the Eastbourne Festival from 3-25 April including a mass sing-along on the Western Lawns, Stomp style dance workshops, burlesque evenings and artist open houses, visitors can take their pick of unique events in the East Sussex resort this spring.
