Beach Lifeguards Share Top Tyro Tips

Tyro Lifeguard
Tyro Lifeguard course. The sessions run throughout August at the Lifeguard Station on the Seafront
23 June 2010

Beach Lifeguards from the country’s sunniest beach are sharing their top tips for staying safe on the seafront as they launch new Tyro Lifeguard Courses for children.

This summer children will get the chance to see what life’s like as a lifeguard with new courses on offer giving kids the low down on personal survival, beach rescue skills, essential beach safety and how to be safe in the sun.

With VisitBritain forecasting that the staycation is set to stay this summer and as the official sunniest place on mainland Britain as confirmed by GMTV, Eastbourne is leading the way by showing children aged 8-12 the safest way to make the most of the award-winning south coast seafront.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, Cllr Neil Stanley said “After trialling these courses in 2009, we are very excited to be launching them again for 2010 and hoping to attract interest from parents and children looking for something to do during the summer holidays. Attracting over 4.5 million visitors every year, Eastbourne seafront gets extremely busy during the summer months and the Tyro Lifeguard is a brilliant way for us to educate young people about the importance of beach safety. Who knows, we may even see these youngsters become qualified beach lifeguards for Eastbourne in a few years’ time!”

The Tyro Lifeguard Courses are being run throughout August at the Lifeguard Station on Eastbourne’s main resort beach with morning and afternoon sessions available.

Children attending the courses will experience an introduction to lifeguarding, while learning top tips for personal survival, rules of beach safety plus basic rescue skills.

The courses cost just £15 per 3-hour session and children must be able to swim 100m unaided to take part.

With the start of the school holidays just over a month away, the Tyro Lifeguard Courses offer a unique opportunity to keep the kids busy while swotting up on important beach safety messages at the same time.

The first courses take place on 2 August, with eight dates confirmed during August. For more information or to book a Tyro Lifeguard Course contact the Seafront Office on 01323 410611 or visit the VisitEastbourne website to book online.
