70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain

29 June 2010

A vibrant 3D floral display is being planted at Eastbourne’s CarpetGardens to help the RAF Association highlight and celebrate this year’s 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

EastbourneCarpetGardens is a popular area for residents to remember all those who have served in the armed forces and given so much in support of our country.

The red, white and blue floral display highlights the hard work of the RAF in conflicts over the last century and they also pay tribute to those members of the RAF who are currently out in theatres such as Afghanistan.

The Mayor of Eastbourne, members from the Eastbourne’s RAF Association Branch, and the local council will be officially unveiling the display on Sunday 4th July at 11:00am.  All are welcome to attend the unveiling.  One local veteran said, “The floral display is a particularly beautiful and very fitting tribute to all those who have served in the RAF. I hope the local community and Eastbourne’s many visitors will really enjoy it.”

After the official unveiling everyone is invited to the Eastbourne RAFA Club at 11 Wish Road (near the war memorial) from 11:30am for refreshment and a light buffet.

The displays are particularly special as this year is the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain - the famous aerial conflict which took place between British and German air forces in 1940 that helped to secure our nation’s freedom.

Heroic sacrifices were made by the young pilots who withstood the German onslaught in what was one of the most important moments in Britain's twentieth century history and a decisive turning point in World War II.

In a speech which followed the battle, Winston Churchill said: “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few,” and from that point those pilots were referred to as “The Few”.

The RAF Association offers friendship, help and support to all serving and former members of the Royal Air Force and their families.

Every year, the charity provides welfare assistance to over 20,000 members of the RAF family who are in need.
