7 July 2010 Eastbourne Borough Council and BESPOKE hosted a successful bike surgery outside the Council’s offices in Grove Road in June.
Forty bikes of all shapes and sizes were given a free health check. The Council and Bespoke were also able to hear from residents what they thought of cycling in the town and received suggestions on how things could be improved.
The prize draw was won by Anne Canby and the competition for who could change a tyre in the fastest time was won by Ismed Hasanag. Each of them will receive a brand new jazzy Nutcase cycle helmet.
Other events were also taking place in the town to encourage people to use their bikes. Sussex Police and Furniture Now launched their new scheme to re-use old bikes and sell them on at a low price to the community. If people would like to see if there is a bike to suit them, call in to Furniture Now at Courtlands Road.
Additionally Eastbourne Hospitals were encouraging staff to commute to work using two wheels instead of four.
Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for the Environment, Councillor Steve Wallis said “It was encouraging to see people wanting to learn more about cycling and to actually get involved. It was also good to get feedback on how we could improve cycling in Eastbourne; we have made a start but we know there is a lot more to do.”
