New Garden Created From Ward Budget

Hedge outside Winter Garden
Hedge outside Winter Garden

11 February 2010

A small enclosed garden has been created outside the Winter Garden with funds from the Meads Ward budget. The grassed area was becoming damaged and unsightly due to people parking on it.

Councillor Nigel Goodyear “The planting has both enhanced the green area and provided a simple barrier to prevent cars parking on and spoiling an area at the heart of Eastbourne’s TheatreLand.  I am delighted with the results.”

More than 300 Griselinia littoralis have been planted to create the enclosed space, which still allows for pedestrian access.  This type of hedge will grow well in the area as it is very resilient to the salt laden coastal winds. It is also not affected by the Euonymus Scale Insect, which since 2002, has resulted in the removal of the diseased and dying Euonymus hedges from PrincesPark through to the Western Lawns.

At a cost of £700 the evergreen hedge and garden that it creates will help improve the visual appearance of the area and will also prevent future parking on the grass.
