Less than a Month to Impress East Sussex Open Judges

15 December 2010

East Sussex artists have less than a month left to pull their entries together for the 2011 Open Exhibition at Towner and impress a top panel of judges including international artist Annika Strom who is based in Hove and Eastbourne-based artist Julian Sutherland-Beatson.

Applications close on 5 January for the 2011 East Sussex Open offering artists in the region the chance to see their works on display at Eastbourne’s award-winning gallery Towner.

Interested artists can submit details of up to five pieces of work that they would like to be considered together with a CV and Artist’s Statement in the hope of making the final cut for the exhibition that will take place at Towner from 2 April – 2 May 2011.

Annika Strom said “I am delighted to be selecting the 2011 East Sussex Open. I look forward to seeing the variety and wealth of talent in the region and I would actively encourage artists to enter this year for the opportunity to show in the amazing ground floor exhibition spaces which are of an international standard.”

The inaugural East Sussex Open took place in spring this year to coincide with the Eastbourne Festival. Attracting 275 entries and displaying the work of 31 regional artists, selectors are hoping for more entries this year to make the selection process even harder and showcase the very best artwork of the county.

Julian Sutherland-Beatson is joining Annika on the selection panel and also involved in the Eastbourne Festival running from 23 April – 15 May 2011, he is keen to see a diverse range of entries. He adds “I know there is a wealth of creative talent in the area, with many individuals and groups making extraordinary work. I look forward to seeing just how the artists and makers of East Sussex respond to the Open this year as it's a great chance to have work shown in such an impressive gallery space.”

Artists from the region can apply now for the chance to have their work picked and exhibited in the vast gallery space that Towner offers in its 668 square metre exhibition hall, with a ceiling 4.5m high meaning it can accommodate paintings, photographs, sculptures and installations of all sizes.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure, Cllr Neil Stanley said “I want to encourage as many artists as possible to take this final opportunity to apply for next year’s East Sussex Open and get the chance to see their work on display at our brilliant gallery. Towner attracts visitors from all over the world so this really is a great platform for showcasing artwork created on Eastbourne’s doorstep.”
