Bumper Bank Holiday in Eastbourne

Market Stall
24 August 2010

It’s still full on summer on the south coast as the UK’s sunniest resort gets ready for a busy Bank Holiday weekend offering visitors plenty of reasons to fit in a break to Eastbourne.

This weekend attractions around the town are hosting a packed programme of events for the August Bank Holiday including a Ravilious Film Weekend at Eastbourne’s award-winning gallery Towner, Summer Nights tribute concert at the Bandstand, RNLI Regatta at Sovereign Harbour Marina, and the Italia in Piazza Market along the seafront promenade on Sunday and Monday.

With hotels and guesthouses offering not to be missed last minute deals for the Bank Holiday, Eastbourne is the number one choice for a staycation this weekend.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, Cllr Neil Stanley said “There is so much to choose from in and around Eastbourne this Bank Holiday, visitors and families will be spoilt for choice! With brilliant activities for children during the day to a top line up of evening entertainment, including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Congress Theatre, which has already received great feedback on twitter and in the press, Eastbourne visitors certainly have lots to fit in this weekend! As the sunniest place in the country, I hope we can look forward to welcoming lots of people to our beautiful resort over the next few days.”

The RNLI Regatta returns to Eastbourne’s cosmopolitan Sovereign Harbour Marina this weekend from Saturday – Monday with market stalls, live bands, yacht racing, rowing and the chance to climb aboard Eastbourne’s All Weather Lifeboat.

For families looking to entertain the kids, the Funfair is taking place until 1 September at Princes Park with new rides and special offer days on Wednesdays and Thursdays, while Eastbourne’s Heritage Centre takes inspiration from the Girl Guides from the 1940’s with a Weatherman workshop for children aged 4-12 invited to have a go at making their own weather instruments on Friday.

For children missing the flying displays seen earlier this month at Airbourne, Eastbourne’s Redoubt Fortress offers an aptly-named Chocks Away family drop-in day on Bank Holiday Monday. Budding pilots and aircraft engineers are invited to help build a giant aeroplane in the parade ground from 11am – 3pm.

Just outside Eastbourne at Herstmonceux Castle, England’s Medieval Festival returns for the whole Bank Holiday weekend with re-enactments, craftsman and traders, and a longbow tournament offering visitors a fascinating insight into the country’s medieval history.

The entertainment in Eastbourne doesn’t end at dusk. Eastbourne’s theatres and Bandstand are offering performances each evening include Beirut’s only UK tour date being played at the Winter Garden and a Grease themed Summer Nights tribute concert at the Bandstand, both on Friday, plus Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Congress Theatre, and Gotta Sing Gotta Dance at the Devonshire Park Theatre.

And with the threat of strikes still causing disruption at UK airports, Eastbourne’s hotels and guesthouses are making the most of the growing number of staycationers with money-saving offers, including £190 for three nights bed and breakfast at The Cherry Tree Guest House, 5 nights for the price of 4 at Ebor Lodge and 7 nights for the price of 6 at The Langtons.
