Rick Mather Architects have been shortlisted for a prestigious award for the design of Eastbourne’s new Towner gallery, which opened on 4 April 2009.
The third Condé Nast Traveller Innovation & Design Awards celebrate excellence in ten categories, ranging from sustainability to transport. Leading experts selected 18 buildings from around the world to be shortlisted in the Culture category; it’s now up to you to decide who should win.
Towner has been nominated alongside other new and exciting designs such as Madrid’s Caixaoforum, Tel Aviv's DesignMuseum and Liverpool’s Bluecoat Arts Centre. The nomination places Eastbourne on a par with some of the world’s foremost travel destinations, and shows that the new Towner (one of the few nominees outwith a major city) will be a real draw for tourists from both the UK and abroad.
According to Condé Nast, “Irrespective of why, where and how you travel, design and innovative thinking enhance the experience”. Towner’s inclusion on the shortlist is a testament to its forward-looking and accessible design, and how this will enrich the experience of visitors to Eastbourne and the region.
