More than £300,000 is to be spent on new and improved play equipment for parks in Eastbourne. The Council is looking at upgrading the play areas in Princes Park as well as providing a natural play area in Hampden Park. Plans are also underway for improving the play facilities in Kingsmere and replacing the ramps at the Sovereign skate park. Another important initiative will be a new play area at Sovereign Harbour.
Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Housing Health and Community Services Councillor Margaret Bannister says, “The Council is committed to improving play areas for young people. The grants we have received recently will help us to achieve this and we welcome these new and improved facilities across the town. Councillors and officers are continuing to look at ways of obtaining further funding so that other play areas can be upgraded or have equipment replaced.”
Although initial consultation has taken place on some of the works proposed, further consultation is planned. Residents, and especially young people, in the areas being consulted, are urged to submit their views and ideas on what they would like in their neighbourhood.
The work at the sites will be funded from money secured by the Council from the sale of land to developers, a national Play Pathfinder Initiative and the Big Lottery fund.
The works are planned for completion by the end of March 2009.
