A new logo for Eastbourne’s new contemporary art gallery is revealed exclusively in the Herald today, celebrating the Towner name.
Decision-makers at the iconic centre for visual arts have stuck loyally with the name Towner to ensure that the much loved name is not lost as a result of the gallery’s relocation to its new home next to the Congress Theatre, in DevonshirePark.
The logo has been designed by Together Design to appeal to the gallery’s wide target audience. The folded strip has a hand-made feel intended to suggest flexibility and encourage a sense of play. There is no fixed brand colour, but a palette of colours has been developed for use across different applications to fit with diverse content.
‘The mark works well at any scale and can be unfolded into a ribbon which makes it a very versatile device. We expect to have some fun with it.’ says Katja Thielen, Creative Director at Together Design, ‘The branding is a departure from Towner’s previous incarnation as TownerArtGallery but captures an innovative spirit that already existed’
Together worked with the gallery’s management team to distil the brand values as a basis for the new graphic identity including the logo.
‘We needed to join up the heritage of the gallery with the feel of the new building and Towner’s ambitions for the future.’ says Emily Penny, Brand Planner at Together Design, ‘The brand is all about combining sophistication and accessibility. Towner will be welcoming and thought-provoking in all that it does.’
Towner Artistic Director Matthew Rowe said:
‘We are delighted with Together Design’s simple and effective solution to a challenging brief, which included appealing to Towner’s broad range of future audiences whilst acknowledging the important history of the Towner Art Gallery and Collection and reflecting the contemporary architecture of the new building.
The best designs are often the most straightforward and in the folded ‘t’ Together have created an instantly recognisable brand and logo that will enable Towner to promote the innovative and inclusive nature of its programmes.’
