Council Addresses Flooding Risk in its 3-year Development Framework Programme

22 October 2008

Managing flood risk is highlighted as part of the Council’s three year planning policy work programme, called the Local Development Scheme which will run until the end of 2011. A strategic flood risk assessment of the town has been carried out to highlight areas that are at risk of flooding that should be avoided in any future development proposals. Councillors also separately passed a motion at its recent full council meeting to seek to de-designate land at Kings Drive to prevent its continued allocation for housing in future development plans.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Spokesperson for Economy, Tourism and Environment Councillor Steve Wallis says, “A Core Strategy for the town is being developed which will specify broad spatial locations for development across the town neighbourhoods.  A number of technical reports have been commissioned to inform the Core Strategy, most of which have either been completed or are nearing completion. Five of them (including the Strategic Flood Risk Assessment) were undertaken in partnership with our neighbouring authority Wealden District Council, for Eastbourne and the South Wealden area.”

Stage 1 of the Strategic Flood Risk (mapping out flood hazard zones across the town) has been completed and is available on the Council’s website.  Stage 2 (refining the tidal flood zones) is nearing completion and will be available at the beginning of the New Year.

As well as a Core Strategy the 3 year Planning Policy Work Programme will also include the following planning policy plans:

  • Town Centre Area Action Plan;
  • EastbournePark Area Action Plan;
  • Affordable Housing and Infrastructure Contributions Development Planning Document;
  • Sustainable Design Supplementary Planning Document;
  • Statement of Community Involvement;
  • Revised Proposals Map

Further details about the contents and when people can have their say on draft policy proposals are can be downloaded from the Council’s website.
