Visitors to Eastbourne will now have two brand new iconic postcards to choose from when they come to sending a holiday souvenir around the world, joining the 15,000 postcards already sold each year in the Tourist Information Centre alone.
A budding young illustrator and a keen photographer will now see their designs posted across the globe after winning Eastbourne Borough Council’s Design a Postcard competition sponsored by Plan Ahead Copying Services & Art Supplies and Jane de Weck Photography. Attracting nearly 250 entries, from photographs of the pier, seafront, and Beachy Head, to graphic designed entries in collage, colourful illustrations and paintings on canvas; judges spent a tough session whittling down the entries to decide on their final two winning designs.
Eastbourne Borough Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Cllr Steve Wallis said “I am delighted with our two new Eastbourne postcards. The response to the Design a Postcard competition was fantastic and judging all the entries was a much harder task than I expected. I am confident that we have chosen two designs that have a strong commercial value and will receive positive sales the minute we unveil the printed designs to the public, taking pride of place in the postcard rack at the Tourist Information Centre.”
Mark Jarvis and Tyler Battle are the two lucky winners who beat off stiff competition and stand the chance of international exposure, with their Eastbourne at Sunrise photographs, and a Beachy Head and ice cream cornet illustration.
Mark’s postcard showing four Eastbourne Pier and Bandstand views capturing the beautiful colours of the sun rising, beat more than 100 others to triumph in the 16 and over’s category. Sponsored by Jane de Weck Photography, Mark has won a day with Jane in her South Street studio.
Tyler, 15, from The Causeway School, created a timeless illustration of Eastbourne that stood out above nearly 150 other entries to win in the under 16’s age group sponsored by Plan Ahead Copying Services & Arts Supplies. Thanks to Tyler’s impressive entry, The Causeway School have won £250 Splat teaching software plus a bumper selection of arts materials courtesy of Plan Ahead.
The two new designs will add to the 114-year history of British Seaside postcards and as a popular seaside resort, postcards remain a staple of Eastbourne’s souvenir industry.
Judges Postcards are printing the two winning designs to be sold in the Tourist Information Centre and are confident that both Mark and Tyler’s designs will be very popular with Eastbourne visitors and top choice when it comes to sending a holiday souvenir to friends and family around the world.
With such a high calibre of entries received, all entrants will be able to see their designs on display in the Tourist Information Centre later this month. A selection of postcard designs will be displayed on a rolling basis and entrants are invited to come along to view their designs and have a look at the competition they were up against.
