The South Downs Management Plan has been prepared by the Joint Committee on behalf of the fifteen partner local authorities across the South Downs. The Plan sets out a 20 year vision and the strategic framework for the future of the South Downs. The main aims are,
- The protection, conservation and enhancement of the natural beauty of the South Downs;
- The promotion of opportunities for the understanding and quiet enjoyment of the area’s special qualities;
- The encouragement of sustainable forms of economic and community development in ways which support the above aims.
Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Spokesperson for Planning Councillor Steve Wallis says, “The South Downs are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and are enjoyed by residents and tourists alike, this authority is determined to safeguard their future for generations to come and this action plan will assist us in ensuring this happens.”
The Plan identifies the key threats to the natural beauty of the South Downs:
- Climate Change
- Development Pressure
- Changing Agriculture and land-based economy
- Rural economy
- Recreational pressures
- Lack of understanding
- Social pressures
- Reliance on the private car and a lack of public transport
Each of the fifteen local authorities will pay £500 towards the printing of the final plan. The joint document will hold a reference to all the partners.
