The Environment Agency has approved the allocation of £264k for coast protection works at Eastbourne in 2008/2009. Each year the Borough Council has to apply for funding to enable these essential works to be carried out.
The works, which will involve depositing shingle onto the beaches where levels have fallen below a critical level, will be carried out over next winter. This is to ensure that there will be no disruption over the busy summer time.
Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment, Councillor Steve Wallis says "This is good news for the residents of Eastbourne. These important works will ensure that our entire coastline is as fully protected as possible and we will continue to have beautiful beaches for people to enjoy."
Environmental considerations are particularly important at the western end of the seafront, which is designated a Marine Conservation Area and Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the rare marine life sustained in the rock pools between the Wish Tower and Holywell. Shingle recharge in this area will be carefully managed with the shingle delivered to a safe area to the east and then transported by trucks to the site for re-grading by bulldozers.
