Free Insulation For Over 60s

Fibreglass insulation materials
23 January 2008

At a time when rising fuel prices are concerning everyone, Eastbourne Borough Council together with the Millfold Group, are helping residents over the age of 60 to get out of fuel poverty by ensuring they remain healthy, warm and save money in their home through the provision of free insulation.

One of the most effective ways of conserving the energy used to heat your home is to install cavity wall and loft insulation, particularly since 60% of the heat lost from the home is through the walls and roof.

Eastbourne Borough Council have been working in partnership with Millfold Group Limited, who are an insulation company, and Eaga who manage the Government’s Warmfront scheme, to help vulnerable people out of fuel poverty through the provision of free or discounted home insulation measures.  To date over 1,000 homes have been improved by this scheme and with additional funding now provided, residents are not too late to benefit.

Councillor Margaret Bannister, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Health said; Not only will a well-insulated home assist in reducing fuel poverty in the Borough, ensuring local residents keep warm and healthy, it can also save money, reduce energy use and carbon emissions.”

To qualify for free insulation you must be:

  • Aged 60 years and over
  • Live in a property that is council tax band A-D
  • Pay your council tax to Eastbourne Borough Council
  • Own your property or rent through a private landlord

Mrs Rumsey, who received free insulation through the scheme said; “This is an excellent scheme. The work was carried out quickly and efficiently by the installers and I look forward to the saving on my energy bills this winter.’’

Households who do not qualify for this scheme but who are in receipt of certain qualifying benefits can also claim 100% grant funded insulation for their home.  Remaining households can take advantage of subsidised prices which start from just £150 for cavity wall insulation and from £169 for loft insulation.
