This year the Beachy Head Marathon has attracted entries from all over the globe with runners from as far away as South Africa, Australia and New Zealand getting ready to take part.
All 1,750 places have now been filled for the cross country challenge that’s been voted one of the top ten marathon courses by readers of Runners World. Every year the same faces return to take part in the 26-mile course and four American women who have competed every year since this marathon began will race for their sixth time.
Eastbourne Borough Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Cllr Steve Wallis said “It is a great success story to have the Beachy Head Marathon voted a favourite with UK runners and even more exciting is that it’s attracting such a vast array of competitors. The familiar faces will be joined by new runners and I hope to see lots of supporters there cheering them all on!”
Runners, joggers and walkers are all taking part in the route, which includes 300 steps and 14 stiles. This year a new course is also being introduced just for juniors. A specially planned route will allow runners aged 8 to 16 to follow a shortened version of the popular Beachy Head Marathon and there are still places left for the two and three kilometre junior races. Juniors are being urged to get in quick for the two kilometre course due to limited availability.
The event taking place on 27 October is organised by Eastbourne Borough Council and sponsored by Rix and Kay Solicitors and Eastbourne Hospitality Association (EHA).
Bruce Hayter, Managing partner from Rix & Kay is looking forward to the marathon: “This is our second year as sponsors and it is rewarding to be involved in such a big event with crucial funds being raised for the runners’ chosen charities.”
The Mayor will officially start the 2007 Beachy Head Marathon at 9am sharp outside St. Bede’s School and spectators can come along to the start line to cheer on participants and take in spectacular views of the South Downs. Sovereign Radio will also be there with all the action from the start and finish lines.
