Frightful Family Half Term Fun

Pevensey Castle
9 October 2007

Eastbourne is in for a bumper Halloween this year with the chance to delve into the chilling tunnels at Newhaven Fort, ghost hunt at Pevensey Castle, and walk across hot coals at Princes Park.

Families will have plenty of activities to choose from between Monday 22 October and Wednesday 31 October as the town prepares for a spook-tacular Halloween. TV’s ‘Most Haunted’ Michelham Priory leads the way with a Fun Day of craft activities, scary ghost stories, traditional Halloween plays and the chance to meet live bats in the Gatehouse.

Eastbourne Borough Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Cllr Steve Wallis said “Halloween is a fun time of year for Eastbourne with attractions in and around the town putting on spooky events. There’s something to do every day of the week and with beautiful forests on our doorsteps, families have also got the chance to make the most of the mild autumn weather.”

For families wanting to make the most of the outdoors this half term, Wilderness Wood will be adorned with spooky Halloween decorations as the Intrepid Theatre Company host chilling challenges in the deep dark woods and give prizes to the best dressed ghouls.

Princes Park will host an exciting Halloween extravaganza where specialists will train budding daredevils to walk across hot coals and brave broken glass, with fancy dress and pumpkin cutting for the less bold.

Boo’s Haunted Cottage at Drusilla’s Zoo opens its doors again this year with creepy corridors leading to all sorts of supernatural surprises and watch out for Winifred the Witch who is waiting to give visitors a fright.

Just outside Eastbourne, Newhaven Fort is swarming with broomsticks and wizard capes where visitors can take part in a spooky Halloween quiz and there’ll even be the chance to meet some real-life nasties as visitors come face to face with snakes, tarantulas and toads in a Zoolab workshop.

For those hoping to see a ghost, Pevensey Castle, eight miles from Eastbourne, is home to countless tales of drummer boys, floating female figures and drumming armies. The castle is open to the public every weekend but the grounds are free to roam alone at any ghostly hour.

There’s plenty more going on in Eastbourne if tales of ghosts and witches sound a little too creepy. The sixth Beachy Head Marathon takes place on 27th October with a junior challenge for kids, plus there’s a miniature railway, indoor wave pool, ten pin bowling and Pevensey Bay’s country market.

For Mums and Dads looking for a bit of ‘me’ time, the Visit Eastbourne website has special half term accommodation deals offering the chance to retreat over the Halloween break.
