The Worshipful the Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Mrs Mary Pooley, will attend the annual Remembrance Day Service at the town’s War Memorial on Sunday, 11 November. The Service will start at 10.40am and will mark two minutes’ silence at 11am along with thousands of other people across the country.
The Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Mary Pooley, says, “It is so important that we stop to remember those who fought so that we can be free today. Everyone across the town should wear their Poppy with pride so that today’s youngsters will remember the sacrifices that were made.”
The Service will be conducted by Reverend (Wing Commander) Howard John, RAF (Rtd.). Also attending will be Honorary Aldermen, Freemen and Past Mayors. The Eastbourne Citadel Salvation Army Band will provide the music.
At 3.00pm the Mayor will visit the Ruthless Memorial at Butts Brow where she will take part in a short Service and lay a wreath in memory of the crew of US B-24D Liberator bomber 'Ruth-Less' who lost their lives when their plane crashed into the hillside in February 1944.
On Sunday evening the commemorations will draw to a close with the Annual Festival of Remembrance at the Congress Theatre at 7.30pm where the Mayor will be joined by:
the High Sheriff of East Sussex, Mrs Caroline Mayhew, and her Consort Mr Anthony Mayhew
the President of the Eastbourne Combined Ex-Services Reverend (Wing Commander) Howard John, RAF (Rtd.)
The Eastbourne Silver Band will provide the musical accompaniment throughout the evening.
Saturday 10 November will see the Mayor visit many of the Poppy sellers around the town who spend many hours in the run up to the 11th preparing and selling poppies in aid of the Royal British Legion.
