New energy efficient lighting is being installed along Eastbourne seafront saving nearly £10,000 in electricity bills a year. Around 5,200 new 24 volt 5 watt Xeon gas filled lamps will replace the existing 15 watt lamps.
Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council Councillor Ian Lucas says, “This is a very satisfying project especially as it was as result of the Council listening to a member of the public who spotted this lighting in Germany. An added benefit is the fact these bulbs are set to last 20,000 hours, that’s around 8 years use which will hugely improve the quality of our splendid seafront.”
Electrical Contractor EDF Energy is currently carrying out the work between the Western Lawns and the Pier, along the first kilometre of the seafront, to be changed to environmentally friendly lights.
When complete the lights will take pride of place covering the seafront between Western Lawns and Channel View Road, and will be in place for the summer season and the start of the bandstand’s musical programme.
The new low voltage lighting system is manufactured by Lumisphere Products Ltd who are based in Essex.
