Annual work to remove the unsightly deposits of chewing gum in Eastbourne started on Wednesday 28 February. This year footpaths at a number of shopping areas throughout the town, (over 8,000 square metres) will be cleaned. The main areas to be cleaned are Grove Road, Cornfield Road, bus lanes, Brassey Parade, Holly Place and Central Avenue. The main precinct area will be cleaned later this year once the gas pipe laying works have been completed.
Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, Councillor Ian Lucas says, “Eastbourne is a very clean town and we intend to keep it that way. This is why we regularly clean gum from the streets in this way. It is now more important that people do not drop chewing gum on the streets because if they do they could face a £75 fixed penalty fine.”
Intex Cleaning Services use a pressure steam cleaning process and will work during the evenings and at night to ensure minimum disruption to the public and traders.
It is estimated that some 20 million people in the UK chew gum and more than 930 million packs of gum are chewed each year.
