Mayor Puts Her Shades On

25 June 2007

The Worshipful the Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Mrs Mary Pooley is encouraging everyone to look cool for charity by taking part in The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association's Shades for a Day on Friday 29 June.

The Mayor will be amongst thousands of people nation-wide making a donation to wear her sunglasses to raise awareness about the importance of eye care, especially in the sun and near water.

The Worshipful the Mayor, Councillor Mrs Mary Pooley says, “Shades Day is a fantastic way to both raise money for the Guide Dogs and to highlight the importance of wearing your sunglasses.”

Guide Dog owners, and Guide Dogs’ Director of Public Policy and Development, Tom Pey, says, “Educating people in how to protect their sight is important, and one simple way to keep eyes healthy is to wear your sunglasses.  If you are outside and the light is so bright that you have to squint or turn your head away, then you know you have to put on your shades.”

Shades Day is an ideal opportunity to think about eye care.  Good sunglasses do not have to be expensive to protect the eyes from damaging UV sunlight, which can contribute to macular degeneration and cataracts.  Experts recommend wraparound-style sunglasses marked with type 2 or 3 and with a CE symbol.
